Description

Nos 37 to 40 on South Street are mid-19th century brick buildings that rise three storeys with an attic, featuring late 19th century shopfronts. They have a moulded wood cornice. Notably, No 39 has a tablet commemorating that Thomas Hardy worked here as an architect's pupil from 1856 to 1862. No 40 displays a tablet inscribed with "William Barnes the Dorset poet lived here 1847-1862." These buildings, along with Nos 1 to 6 South Terrace, No 40A, No 41A, and the Post Office, form a cohesive group.
