Description

The United Reformed Church, built between 1856 and 1857 by architects Poulton and Woodman of Reading, is a former Congregational Church located on South Street. The building is constructed of Portland rubble with ashlar dressings. It features a nave and two aisles, with the west end facing the street, separated by buttresses that have setbacks and are topped with tall pointed finials.

The south aisle slightly projects at the west end and is topped with a steep polygonal spire, which has paired ogee-arched bell openings beneath, each pair featuring its own gablet. Below the spire are two pointed lancet windows with a small amount of early English tracery, and beneath these are planked double doors with ornamental iron hinges, set in a chamfered pointed arch with a hoodmould.

The nave includes a large pointed west window with a hoodmould, consisting of five lights with a vaguely "Kentish" tracery above and a lower order of pointed tracery below. The north aisle has one pointed arch window with a hoodmould, containing two lights and Decorated tracery. Below this window are planked double doors with elaborate iron hinges, also in a pointed arch, featuring two orders of chamfers and a hoodmould.

To the right of the church is a gateway with a steep coped gable crowned by a fleur-de-lys finial, featuring a steep cusped pointed arch and very good contemporary iron gates.
