Description
Napper's Mite is a building founded in 1610 by Sir Robert Napper to provide accommodation for 10 poor men. Originally, there were 10 single-storey dwellings arranged along the front and around an inner courtyard, with a room over the front range used for Bible instruction. The buildings have undergone significant restoration, with the front appearing to be re-faced.
The two-storey stone front features a dwarf wall and a segmental-arched arcade leading to a cloister. Above the ground floor, there is a moulded string course. The first floor has five two-light casement windows, and in the center, there is a parapetted gable topped with a gabled bell-cote. A corbel bracket supporting a 19th-century clock is located slightly off-center in the gable.
A central doorway opens into a small square courtyard surrounded by the single-storey dwellings. The courtyard features mullioned casements with hollow chamfered mouldings. There are two pairs of brick stacks placed diagonally and three tall brick stacks from the 18th century. The rear of the building has one gable at each end and a central gabled porch, with five mullioned casements that have hoodmoulds, including one on the left side that belongs to the chapel and features three arched lights.
