Description
31 Newland and the east range are located in the grounds of Sherborne House. The east part of this range was previously listed under map reference 179 and is separated from No 31 by a low stone rubble wall.
No 31 is designed in the 19th-century Tudor Gothic style and was once the meeting place for the Sherborne Literary Institute, later known as the Macready Institute. It features a stone front and a slate roof, with stone mullioned windows. The building projects forward from the west end of the block and has two storeys with a hipped gable end. There are two-light windows both above and below in the gable end, and a doorway with a pointed head is located on the east return.
The east-west centre wing is one storey with an attic, featuring a central doorway with a pointed head, flanked by a single-light window on each side and two two-light windows at the outer edges. The east projection is accessible from the grounds of Sherborne House and has a hipped gable end with stone slates at the eaves, along with a later gabled dormer. The building has stone quoins and a coved cornice, with one large segmental-headed doorway below.
At the rear, there is a long two-storey and attic range that appears to date from the earlier 18th century, also featuring a coved cornice and dormers.
31 Newland and the east range, along with the front and rear garden walls of Sherborne House, No 41 (The Manor House), three cottages next to The Manor House, two adjoining cottages, Nos 57 to 93 (odd), and the north-east boundary wall to Newland Close, form a group.
