Description

Park Lodge is a detached house built in the 17th century and altered in the 18th century. It features colourwashed brick walls and a tiled roof, with a central brick stack that has projecting piers and a recessed cap. The layout consists of a two-room lobby-entrance plan, with a projecting porch and staircase tower at the center of the front wall. At the rear, there is a single-storey lean-to with rubble stone walls and a tiled roof. The building has two storeys and attics.

The projecting wing includes a segmental-headed doorway on the ground floor, above which is a projecting brick arch made of two orders; the inner order has bricks set diagonally to create a "dentil" arch, with a small blocked opening within it. A string course runs above the arch. On the first floor, there is a two-light stone mullioned window beneath a similar arch, and in the attic, a small two-light stone mullioned window is set in a half-hipped gablet. Both sides of the projecting wing have two-light stone mullioned windows on the ground and first floors, also under similar arches, with a string course above the ground floor arches.

Inside, the main ground floor rooms feature large open fireplaces with moulded timber lintels. One first floor room has a fireplace with a bolection moulded surround. The house has panelled doors set in 17th-century moulded frames. The staircase, dating from the early 18th century, has widely spaced heavily moulded balusters, indicating that it replaced an earlier staircase, possibly a newel stair. The roof is a queen post design, and there is a cellar under the eastern section that was once used as the Dower House for Lulworth Castle. Park Lodge is noted for its unusual character.
