Description

Knighton Manor is a detached house dating from the mid-18th century with an early 19th-century addition. The original front block is of red brick in a Flemish bond, while the later addition to the east is of flint with brick banding and detailing. It has brick stacks and slate roofs.

The 18th-century front block was originally a symmetrical, steep-roofed structure with gable stacks. A bay was added to the left in the 19th century to create a kitchen, and a large addition on the east side—with higher ceiling pitches and hipped roofs returning towards the original unit to form an internal valley—was made in the early 19th century. The house is entered from the south into a long stair hall, which, with a passage, separates the two parts of the plan. The return gable to the right incorporates a Flemish garden wall and some stone and flint at low levels, possibly from an earlier building on the site. The house has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, with a four-window front.

The original front has a symmetrical arrangement of 4 windows, with 2-light, 3-light, and 2-light, 3-light glazing-bar casements. The ground floor windows are 2x3, 3x3 lights, while the first floor windows are 2x3, 2x3, and 3x2 lights. A six-panel, part-glazed door is set beneath a lead hood on brackets. A three-course plain string runs along the original three-bay front. A lean-to on four wood posts, with stone bases, is attached to the left gable end, covering a 19th-century glazed door at the end of the through passage. The right gable end has a small 2-light casement to the attic, and to the ground floor, two 12-pane-over-one 12-pane sash windows and a gabled porch containing a pair of four-centred, part-glazed doors set within a rubbed brick, four-centred arch. The east front has a 1:2 window arrangement; on the ground floor, two large tripartite sashes (5 panes, 15 panes, 5 panes) and a 12-pane sash, all with good, wide-splayed brick flat arches, which are also beneath a second, smaller arch course. The first floor has three 12-pane sashes.

Inside, the 18th-century block features transverse, stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops carried on console brackets. It also has original panelled doors and an A-frame roof with heavy principals and two purlins. A tight, square spiral staircase leads from the first floor to the attic. The later block has a wide through hall with a straight stick staircase featuring a cut string and scroll tread ends. Two principal rooms have marble fire surrounds of pilaster and rosette form with thick marble mantels and good panelled doors with working shutters. Historical records suggest a late 18th-century date, however this seemingly conflicts with the internal evidence.
