Description

The Thatched House is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a private dwelling. It dates from the early 17th century, with rebuilding at the east end in the 18th century, and a barn that has been transformed into living quarters at the west end. The building features banded flint and brick walls, with some cob, and a thatched roof that is half-hipped to the west and gabled to the east. There are brick stacks on the ridge and at the east gable. The house is 1½ storeys tall and has four windows, which are 2-light wood casements with glazing bars and wood cills, dating from the 20th century. The front door, located at the original centre, is panelled and glazed, also from the 20th century.

Inside, there is a central hall that leads to a staircase. The left room features an open fireplace with straight-chamfered oak jambs that have stepped stops, and a mitred lintel with some moulding, dating from the 17th century. There is a brick bread oven in the left jamb and another bread oven at the rear of the fireplace, which is now broken and blocked. The ceiling beam is straight-chamfered. The right room has a fireplace with brick jambs and a rough wood lintel from the 18th century, and the floors are made of flagstone. An upstairs room at the left end contains a small brick fireplace with a wood lintel. The roof structure consists of substantial 17th-century timbers, with principals resting directly onto the wall-head.
