Description

The village cross in Shillingstone is a Grade II listed structure. It features steps, a plinth, and a pedestal that date back to the 15th century, while the shaft and cross-head were added in 1891. The cross is made of ashlar stone. It has a square base with two steps; the lower step has a recessed fascia and chamfered nosing. Above this is a chamfered square plinth that supports an octagonal shaft-pedestal, which has broach stops and traces of carving. The shaft includes corner standards, and the head is adorned with crocketted finials and niches that contain a carved crucifixion and other biblical scenes. The cross is also scheduled as an ancient monument (Dorset no. 266).
