Description
The Barnes Monument, located 3 metres south of the nave of the Church of St Peter in Winterborne Came, is a Grade II listed memorial cross dating from the late 19th century. Made of stone, it features a tapering cross shaft that is panelled and adorned with 'Celtic' interlace and an embossed cross on its face, with cable moulding at the corners. The cross has a cross-in-wheel head, which is also bossed at the centre and at the terminals. The plinth of the cross bears the inscription: "In Memory of William Barnes, Died Oct 7th 1886. Aged 86 Years. For 24 Years Rector of this Parish. This Memorial was raised to his Memory by his Children and Grandchildren." The sculptor's name, Grassby of Dorchester, is inscribed on the plinth. This memorial is of special historic interest as it commemorates William Barnes, a polymath, Dorset dialect poet, schoolmaster, and rector of Winterborne Came from 1862 to 1886. Barnes spent his later years at Old Came Rectory.
