Description
West Hill Cottage is a detached toll-house built in the later 19th century. It features dressed stone walls with ashlar Ham stone quoins and slate roofs that have stone gable copings, moulded kneelers, and apex blocks. The building has coupled square stone stacks with moulded cornices located on the main ridge and the north-east wall.
The plan is a rectangular block with projecting bays, set diagonally to the side walls, and it stands two storeys high. The fenestration is irregular, consisting of hollow-chamfered stone mullions with cast-iron casements that have a hexagonal pattern of glazing bars. There are canted bays on the ground floor flanking the original front doorway, featuring three lights at the front and one light on the canted side. Above the canted bays are two-light windows, and there is a four-light window above the door.
The front doorway originally had hollow-chamfered jambs and a four-centred head with a large label above. It features a plank-and-muntin door with a fitting four-centred head from the 19th century. The 20th-century extensions to the south are not considered of special interest.
