Description

Well Cottage is a detached cottage with a core dating back to the 16th century, significantly altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cottage is constructed of rubble-stone walls and has a thatched roof with gable ends. A stone stack is located at the left-hand gable, and another is on the ridge towards the right-hand side of the building. It is two storeys high with four windows on the ground floor, comprised of 2-light, 2-light, 3-light (20th century), 2-light wood casements with glazing bars, and 3-light iron casements in wood frames above. A 20th-century plank door is situated towards the left of centre of the front elevation.

Inside, a plank-and-muntin screen with an integral door head divides the southern room, a feature of the 16th century. This screen displays straight-chamfered muntins with original top and bottom rails. The hall contains a fireplace with 16th-century timber jambs and a depressed-arch head. A dog-leg staircase with a door is located on the rear wall, opposite the fireplace. A further fireplace on the south end wall is a 17th-century insertion, featuring rubble-stone jambs and a cambered wood lintel. On the first floor, large stack embrasures are staggered on the end wall, and a central wall. The roof retains jointed-cruck construction, with collars and a single face-peg, having undergone later timber strengthening and bolted additions.
