Description

The Fordington German Prisoners of War Memorial is a First World War memorial dedicated to German prisoners of war, erected in 1919.

The memorial is built into a bank on a hillside in Fordington Cemetery and faces north. It has a rectangular shape, measuring 1.8 meters high, 3 meters wide, and 2 meters deep. The structure features a carved Portland stone panel depicting a German soldier, framed by two wrought-iron crosses, all set within an alcove formed by a coursed and random rubble wall. The panel is mounted on a plinth and includes a moulded cornice and set-back tooled outer edges. The central figure of the soldier is shown in uniform, wearing a helmet, trench coat, and boots, kneeling with his head bowed and hands clasping an upright rifle. Beneath the figure is an inscription that reads: HIER RUHEN DEUTSCHE KRIEGER IN/ FREMDER ERDE DOCH UNVERGESSEN/ 1914 DORCHESTER 1919, which translates to "Here rest German soldiers in foreign soil yet unforgotten."

The two wrought-iron crosses are positioned on a step within recesses, painted black with gold detailing. The surrounding wall rises in two tiers on each side of the alcove, with the bottom tier projecting out from the main face of the wall and capped with ashlar coping stones. Two corbels are set high in the wall on either side of the alcove. The entire monument rests on a foundation made of random rubble and concrete.
