Description
St Aldhelm's Chapel is a redundant Chapel of Ease, dated 1838. It features a combination of banded brick and flint construction, with rusticated brick quoins and ashlar dressings, topped by a slate roof. The layout includes a combined nave and chancel, a north chapel, and a north tower, all designed in an electric classical style. The chapel has round-headed ashlar windows with moulded architraves and stone keystones, some of which include transoms at the springing line. A modillioned brick cornice adds detail, while the rusticated west doorway is framed by a double, panelled doorway in a pilastered surround, with a 3-light window above it. The belfry features 2-light round-headed ashlar windows, and an ashlar open cupola with round arches supported by Roman Doric columns, topped with a vase finial.
Internally, the chapel contains reset 16th and 17th century panelling, a wall tablet commemorating Henry Brouncher and family from 1825, and a reset stone cartouche with painted arms. A gadrooned stone font with a fluted bowl, likely from 1838, is also present, along with an openwork pulpit that incorporates 17th century elements.
