Description

Hill Close is a detached house built in 1896, designed by architect C. F. Voysey for Alfred Sutro. The house has later flat-roofed extensions on the south side, which were not designed by Voysey. These extensions were modified around 1984 to include pitched roofs, created by architects Manning, Clamp and Partners. The building features roughcast walls with rough ashlar dressings and a hipped stone slate roof, along with roughcast stacks that have tapered tops.

The house has an irregular plan and consists of one storey with attics. The front elevation includes a central projecting bay with a lead flat roof, featuring a glazed metal door with lead lights. To the right of the door is a three-light stone mullioned window and a single-light window, both with lead lights. Above these, on the first floor, there is a similar four-light window. To the left of the bay, on the ground floor, there are two similar windows, one with three lights and the other with four lights, along with a small two-light window under the eaves. A flat-roofed dormer with a three-light window is also present.

On the right side of the bay, there is another four-light window on the ground floor and a flat-roofed dormer with a two-light window in the attic. A small triangular dormer sits above the central bay. The later extension on the right matches the original construction but features artificial stone slate roofs. At the left end of the house is a large studio room with a glazed end wall, which was modified around 1984. The interior retains some original features. Hill Close is noted as Voysey's only known house in Dorset, as referenced in Newman and Pevsner's "Buildings of England, Dorset."
