Description

The Royal Victoria Hotel and inn dates from around 1870. It is a complex building constructed with rendered walls and a slate roof. The main block is L-shaped, with a long return to the south and a further domestic block to the east, enclosing a small courtyard. It has two storeys and a 1+5-window facade. The windows are plate-glass sashes; those on the first floor are set within flat segmental head surrounds and a continuous cill band. Ground floor windows have arched heads under a moulded lintol band and plain cills. The first bay is projected forward. A square, recessed porch with arched openings to three sides features a 19th-century door. The building has a small plinth, moulded cornice, blocking, and a parapet coping that extends to the right return, which features three equally-spaced windows above three ground-floor windows. A later projecting square porch is also present on the return. At the right end of this return is a lower gabled unit with a single bay, connecting to a hipped-roof, three-bay house with margin-pane sashes and a central canted oriel with a flat roof. On the north side, there is a 19th-century door with an overlight and two four-pane sashes. The hotel occupies an important corner position on Victoria Square, complementing the 'Little Ship' opposite.
