Description

This is a detached farmhouse dating to the late 16th century, with substantial rebuilding in the late 17th century. It was likely originally a longhouse, with the byre having been rebuilt as a kitchen. The house is constructed of rubble stone, with the northern section having a slate roof and the southern section, the rebuilt byre, being thatched. Two plastered stacks are visible, one to the left of the entrance and one at the right end of the building. The house is now arranged as three rooms and a cross-passage. A 20th-century stone porch with a gabled tiled roof provides access, featuring a ledged door with side-lights. The inner door has a four-centred stone arch with a carved head above it. The older, northern section of the house has two casement windows with moulded timber frames and lead lights on the ground floor. The attic has three casement windows with lead lights within a large hipped dormer. The southern section, the rebuilt byre, has two casement windows with lead lights on the ground floor, and a double dormer with two casement windows with lead lights in the attic. A 20th-century single-storey stone extension with a tiled roof and three casement windows with lead lights sits at the right end. At the rear are a two-storeyed extension with twin gables, and a later single-storey lean-to extension. Internally, the late 16th-century hall features a large fireplace with a moulded stone surround and a deep stone lintel, as well as deeply chamfered intersecting ceiling beams. A four-centred arched doorway leads into the cross-passage, with an early ledged door. A plank and muntin partition separates the hall and the roof space, with a four-centred arched doorway and an early ledged door. The kitchen has a large, open fireplace, a deep timber lintel, and a bread oven. One exposed ceiling beam is present. The house is of group value.
