Description
The Cross and Hand is a medieval wayside monolithic shaft located in Batcombe. It has a necking and capital, and is made of stone in an oval form that crudely tapers. The shaft stands approximately 107 centimeters tall, with the capital measuring 28 centimeters square. It is suggested that this shaft may belong to a group of pre-conquest shafts, with the pillar of Eliseg being the most well-known example; if this is the case, the capital would have been cut down. The hand that is said to have been carved on one face of the shaft is no longer visible. The site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument in Dorset, numbered 137.
