Description

Durweston Bridge is a road bridge over the River Stour, dated 1795. It was designed by Joseph Towsey for H W Portman of Bryanston. The bridge is constructed from greensand ashlar and features three semi-circular arches. Triangular cutwaters rise to form refuges, and the parapets have rounded copings with plat-bands below. The plain ashlar voussoirs are complemented by walls that sweep out and terminate at ashlar piers. There is an inscription that records the building of the bridge, along with a plaque warning of severe penalties for anyone causing malicious damage to it. A portion of the bridge is located in the parish of Stourpaine.
