Description
The Ship Hotel, located at 23 High Street, is a Grade II listed building that incorporates an additional former separate building on the west side facing Taunton Road. The original central section likely dates from the 18th century, while the sections to the east and west were built in the early 19th century.
The central section features rendered walls and a Purbeck Stone roof, standing two storeys high. It has double-hung sash windows with glazing bars and two canted bay windows on the ground floor flanking the entrance door. One first-floor window is adorned with an ornamental cast iron balcony. The eastern section has rendered walls and a slate roof, rising three storeys with double-hung sash windows and a possibly inserted canted bay window on the first floor, along with a round-headed doorway. The western section also has rendered walls and a Purbeck Stone roof, and is two storeys tall with double-hung sash windows featuring glazing bars.
At the rear of the western wing along Taunton Road, there is a car park enclosed by high Purbeck Stone walls, which appears to be the site of demolished cottages. In front of the building, there is a stone-paved forecourt enclosed by stone bollards and iron rails.
