Description
This is a terrace of shops built in 1835. The buildings at each end project slightly. Originally rendered, the rendering has been recently removed from the two end buildings revealing Purbeck stone walls with brick window surrounds. The roofs are slate-covered. Cast iron balconies are present on the first floor. The upper floors feature double-hung sash windows. Number 11, now the White House Inn, has large, modern windows with small panes on the ground floor. Numbers 11a and 13, currently a shop, were formerly the retirement home of John Mowlem and later the "Queen's" Restaurant. This building contains a 19th-century shop front. Above the roof line is a projecting battlemented tower, which was originally John Mowlem’s observatory. There are three inserted dormers below this tower. Number 15 has a modern shop front and a large, modern inserted dormer in the attic. Number 17 incorporates a 19th-century shop front with projecting canted bays on either side of a central door, and a dormer in the attic. Number 17a, located at the rear of Number 17 and facing Cliff Place, was likely a separate cottage, probably dating to the 18th century. The building has Purbeck stone walls and a roof, with modern windows and a door. A stone boundary wall connects the building to Numbers 1 and 2 Cliff Place, and appears to be located on the site of a demolished cottage.
