Description

Zelstone House is a detached house located in the village centre of Winterborne Zelston. The rear part of the building dates from the mid-18th century, while the front section was built in the early 19th century. The house features brick walls with a dentil cornice on the rear range, a tiled roof on the rear, and a slate roof on the front. It has brick end stacks and is two storeys high, with a double-pile plan and parallel ridges, including a rear wing on the right side that is part of the original structure. The front range is designed in the Regency style, with a central recessed section flanked by shallow brick pilasters.

The ground floor of this central section has been infilled to create a porch, which features stone pilasters, a pair of glazed doors with bordered glazing, side-lights, and a fanlight with intersecting glazing. Above, there is a balcony adorned with ornamental iron trellis. On either side of the central section, there are two sash windows with glazing bars on each floor. The earlier rear range includes a panelled door beneath a flat hood supported by shaped brackets and casement windows with cast iron glazing.

Inside the front range, one ground floor room contains a re-set 18th-century carved pine fireplace, and there are original cornices and joinery throughout these rooms. The staircase in the rear range has a cut string, plain balusters, and turned newels. Beneath the front range, there is a cellar with brick vaulting supported by a cast iron Tuscan column. At the rear, a raised garden features a cob wall with a tiled capping.
