Description
The Horn Hill Tunnel South Entrance is a tunnel entrance dated 1832. Above the entrance, there is a tablet with the inscription: "The public are permanently indebted for the erection of this TUNNEL to the zealous exertions of GILES RUSSELL of Beaminster, GENT. Begun August 1831, finished June 1832. M. Lane, Civil Engineer." The structure features ashlar stone walls that flank the arch. The arch itself has rusticated jambs, voussoirs, and a dropped keystone, with flat imposts. A round string course runs above the tablet. The parapets and return walls are stone-coped and curve down to square terminal capped piers. The tunnel is 345 feet long.
