Description
The Ilchester Arms is a public house with a core dating back to the 15th century, featuring a 17th-century ceiling and later alterations. The building has stone walls that are rendered and a thatched roof with gable ends and block ridging. The right-hand gable has stone gable coping, while the left-hand gable features three brick stacks that back onto a former cross-passage. There is a small rear wing at the center, also with stone gable coping. The structure is two storeys high and has four windows, which are renewed three-light mullions with hollow chamfers. The windows are fitted with 20th-century metal casements and leaded lights. The front door, located left of center, is a 20th-century plank door with small glass leaded lights above. A 20th-century rendered porch with a Tudor-style arch-head is present, with "Ilchester Arms" incised above in capitals. The pitch gable has a thatched roof.
Inside, the building features deep chamfered ceiling beams with filleted stops that create large compartments. There is a large open fireplace measuring 8 feet by 4 feet, with a chamfered wooden lintel, mitred corners, and chamfered stone jambs, which backs onto the former cross-passage. The roof consists of five arch-braced collar-beam trusses, with collars positioned above the ceiling. There are two sets of chamfered through-purlins and chamfered wind-braces in the three central bays, indicating the original open hall area from the 15th century.
