Description
The remains of the Old Church of St Mary Magdalene, a Grade II* listed building, consist primarily of the west tower of the former parish church, which dates back to the early 15th century. The nave and chancel were demolished around 1883 when a new church was constructed. The tower features local rubble walls with freestone dressings and a roof covered with stone slates. It stands three storeys high, topped with a low pyramidal roof and supported by diagonal buttresses on the west side.
The west window of the tower contains a single pointed light, while the second stage has a small loop in the south wall. The bell-chamber is equipped with a two-light window on both the east and west walls, although the eastern window is now blocked. The pointed tower-arch, which has chamfered reveals, is also blocked, but a doorway with a 19th-century head and a triangular rear-arch is set within the blocking. The east face of the tower is adjacent to the butt-ends of the demolished nave. Currently, the tower is heavily overgrown with ivy and is in a ruinous condition.
