Description
Pentruse Cottage is a cottage that later became a lodge for Pentruse Farmhouse. It dates from around the mid-19th century and was extended later in the 19th century. The building is constructed of slate rubble with red brick window dressings and slate sills, topped by a rag slate hipped roof with black glazed ridge tiles. There is a brick axial stack located to the left of the center, featuring a rebuilt brick shaft, and a right-hand end stack with a brick shaft.
The cottage has a three-room single depth plan. The original two-room plan on the left includes a lobby entrance against a central axial stack, with back-to-back fireplaces that heat a small parlour on the left and a larger original kitchen on the right. A small room with a loft above was added to the right end later in the 19th century. In the late 20th century, a single-storey extension was built at the back.
The exterior is two storeys high with a two-to-one window range; the one window to the right is part of the later 19th-century extension, designed in the same style. The original 19th-century windows are 16-pane casements with red brick jambs and slate sills. The ground floor features cambered brick arches, while the first floor has small gables above the eaves with zigzag bargeboards. The doorway to the left of center has a red brick cambered arch and a 19th-century glazed and panelled door. Similar gabled heads are present on the windows at the left-hand end and at the rear, both of which are also 19th-century casements. The back of the cottage includes a 20th-century single-storey rendered extension.
Inside, the smaller left-hand room features a bracketed chimney-piece, while the central room has a 20th-century chimney piece and a 19th-century straight staircase against the back wall, complete with stick balusters and a square newel. The ceilings throughout the cottage have exposed softwood joists.
