Trebarfoote Manor Including Barn Adjoining At North East

Trebarfoote Manor is a farmhouse, originally a manor house, with an adjoining barn. It underwent an early 17th-century remodelling of an earlier building, and further alterations occurred in the early 19th century to the south facade. The house is constructed of stone rubble, with roofs of small slates to the left and centre, squared rag slate to the right and rear. Stone stacks are positioned at the gable ends, with a projecting rear lateral stack featuring a brick shaft, and a brick shaft on the front. The main range comprises three rooms, arranged around a through passage plan, with the original front entrance now blocked. A former kitchen at the lower end of the passage may date back to the original building. The hall is heated by a rear lateral stack, and a heated parlour at the higher end. A rear right wing likely served as a service wing, with the adjoining barn to the rear left now incorporated into the house's living space. The building has a three-room plan with rear wings, and stands two storeys and a garret high. The long, asymmetrical, but regularized south front has seven windows and a 20th-century gabled central porch. There are three ground floor windows to the left of the porch and one to the right, featuring 16-pane boxed horned sashes under stone arches. Similar windows are on the first floor. A ground floor window one from the right is a 12-pane timber sash under a granite lintel, re-used from a former 2-light mullioned window. The first floor window above it is identical, with a long timber lintel. A large 3-light 20th-century casement with 6 panes per light sits on the ground floor to the right, while a 3-light 20th-century casement with leaded panes is above it, also under a long timber lintel. Two stone mullioned windows are visible on the rear. Inside, the former through passage features moulded beams with unusual stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. A ground floor room to the right has a large fireplace under a timber lintel. The hall has a 4-centred arched stone fireplace with a plaster chimneypiece bearing the Trebarfoote quartering Burgoyne crests, a moulded cornice, and a dado. The parlour has a plaster cornice and decorated plaster ceiling. A 20th-century fireplace features a Jacobean-style wooden overmantel with the Trebarfoote arms. The interior is unusually complete for the 17th century. A portion of the gable end has been rendered. Early 17th-century staircases to the rear east and rear west feature heavy turned balusters and moulded handrails. Numerous ovolo-moulded stopped doorways are present. A first-floor room above the parlour has an ovolo-moulded stopped fireplace beam, stud and plaster partition wall. A canted ceiling of moulded plaster is in the chamber above the hall. Stairs lead to a plastered attic with an ovolo-moulded doorway. Roof trusses over the lower end have cambered collars lap dovetailed into principals and two tiers of trenched purlins. The barn adjoining the rear is now incorporated into the house and has cob walls on a stone plinth and a slate roof gabled at the ends. The barn roof features pegged trusses and three tiers of purlins resting on principals, and has pigeon holes on the front. A 19th-century plank stable door is located to the left of a rubble stone buttress. A datestone, currently located in the porch, is carved with "WT MT 161" (the final number is missing), referring to William and Mary Trebarfoote.
