Description
The bridge and lychgate to the Church of St Neot, located immediately southeast of Guildhouse, is a Grade II listed structure. The bridge, likely built in the 18th century, is accompanied by a lychgate from the late 19th or early 20th century.
The bridge spans a stream that runs south of the churchyard and Guildhouse. It is constructed of stone rubble and features parapet walls capped with slate. The single-span bridge has a segmental stone arch and stone parapets, with timber posts that support the gabled roof of the lychgate, which is also covered with slate. Under the lychgate, there is a coffin rest, and at the south end of the bridge, there is a timber pedestrian gate.
The lychgate roof includes openwork timber gable ends with curved braces between the posts and collar. The stone coffin rest features probably 18th-century moulded freestone capping. The parapet walls of the bridge end on the south side with gate piers that are rectangular in shape. The timber gate consists of three fielded panels below a low middle rail, with a timber cross and panels featuring round-headed timber plate tracery above. A path of pitched stones crosses the bridge.
