Description

The winding engine house, also known as a whim, is located at the south-east corner of King Edward Mine and dates from the late 19th century. It is currently derelict and constructed from uncoursed granite rubble with quoins, featuring a bob wall made of large dressed blocks and brick arches over the windows. The building has a rectangular plan, with the bob wall situated to the north, a chimney attached at the south-west corner, and a boiler house on the west side, north of the chimney. The bob wall includes a round-headed opening with granite voussoirs and a keystone, while the south and east walls have round-headed windows on two levels. The tapered cylindrical chimney has lost its brick upper stage and now ends below roof level. The former boiler house, attached to the west side, is a long rectangular single-storey structure aligned north-south, made from similar materials but featuring a slurried slate roof and inserted garage doors in the south gable wall. This building was likely constructed by the South Condurrow Mine Company before 1897, when the site was acquired by the Camborne School of Mines. It is part of a uniquely complete set of turn-of-the-century tin mining buildings on this site.
