Description

Fortescue's Shaft, South Engine House, is a derelict winding engine house, also known as a "whim," located on the site of the former Grenville United North Mine. It was likely built in the late 19th century. The structure is made of large granite rubble arranged in courses, featuring quoins, a bob wall constructed from granite blocks, and window arches made of yellow brick. The upper stage of the chimney is also brick, and the building is currently roofless.

The engine house has a rectangular plan oriented on a north-south axis, with the bob wall situated to the north. In front of this wall are the foundations of the former winding drum, and a circular chimney is attached at the south-west corner. This building is smaller than the associated pump engine house, consisting of three stages above a high plinth.

Architectural details include a narrow segmental-headed driver's window in the bob wall, a round-headed cylinder door in the rear wall, and two round-headed windows above this door. There is also a narrow doorway in the west wall near the bob wall, a round-headed window at the top stage on this side, two round-headed windows on the first stage on the east side, and one on each level above. A pair of plates ties the rod through the bob wall. The tapered cylindrical chimney lacks a cornice at the junction with the brick stage, which is damaged at the top. The foundations of the winding drum are partly in disrepair.

This engine house functioned alongside the pump engine house located approximately 50 meters to the north, creating an impressive group of mining structures. It is part of a series of mines that exploited the Great Flat Lode and is designated as an Ancient Monument.
