Description
Trafalgar is a house built around 1810-1820, constructed from slate stone rubble with a slate roof featuring hipped ends and overhanging eaves. It has four diagonally-set rendered brick axial stacks on the ridge. The house has a double depth plan, with a central entrance hall leading to two main reception rooms at the front and two smaller service rooms at the rear. The front and rear rooms are heated by back-to-back fireplaces. There is a staircase at the rear of the passage, which has a shallow projection on the rear elevation. The cellar likely originally contained a dairy.
The house is two storeys and has a basement, with a symmetrical three-window front. The original 2-light casements have a top light, margin glazing bars, and crown glass, with granite cills. The central entrance features a 19th-century six-panel door. On the ground floor, there are two tall 2-light casements, while the first floor has three casements. The side elevations remain unaltered, although the sashes were renewed in the late 20th century. There is a possible cloam oven projection on the left-hand side wall, likely serving the kitchen at the rear left. External stone rubble steps lead to the basement.
The rear elevation is unaltered, featuring a central shallow projection for the stair, a 19th-century door to the left, and a replaced sash to the right. The interior is largely intact, with the entrance hall showcasing a fluted cornice and hall arch. The left-hand room has an early 19th-century plaster ceiling band that is largely intact, decorated with stylised volutes and a beaded cornice below. The right-hand room features an early 19th-century plaster ceiling band that is complete on two sides, adorned with a vine leaf and corn sheaf trail, with rosettes at the corners. The cornice is decorated with an egg and dart motif. An early 19th-century open string stair with stick balusters and a wreathed mahogany rail is present, along with complete doors, doorcases, window shutters, and slate flag floors. Trafalgar is a well-preserved early 19th-century house set in a magnificent location overlooking the Valency valley.
