Description
Penventon Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a private house, dating from the early 19th century, though it may have earlier origins. The building is constructed of slate stone rubble and features a slate roof with gable ends. On the left gable end, there is a projecting stone rubble kitchen stack with a cloam oven, while a stone rubble stack is located on the right gable end.
At the time of the survey, internal access was not possible. The cottage likely started as a two-room plan house with a central entrance. The left room served as the kitchen, heated by the gable end stack, while the right room may have been unheated as there is no visible stack. In the mid-19th century, a one-room parlour addition was made to the right end, which included a new entrance to the left; the original doorway was blocked, and an unheated outshot was added at the back of the kitchen.
The cottage is two storeys high and has a regular three-window front, featuring 20th-century fenestration in earlier openings and a part-glazed door from the same period. The ground floor openings have brick segmental arches. The rear elevation remains unaltered, with a lean-to outshot. Although the interior was not accessible during the survey, the parlour is noted to have 19th-century ceiling beams and a 19th-century cast-iron grate.
