Description

The south east wing of Trebiffin Farmhouse is a ruin dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It is constructed of slate stone rubble, and while it originally had gable ends, the roof is now missing. A large stone rubble stack is located on the right-hand gable end. The original layout of the building is uncertain, but it appears to have had a plan that possibly included two rooms and a through passage. The main entrance, situated to the right of the center, leads directly into the right-hand room, which is heated by the gable end stack. There may have been a through passage, with a section of the rear wall opposite the entrance possibly partially rebuilt. The screen on the lower right side of the passage has been removed, and there is a stone rubble cross wall on the left with a blocked door opening. A separate entrance has been added to the left-hand room on the front elevation, and a straight joint on the left may indicate that the left-hand room was enlarged.

The building was originally two storeys with a low first floor. The door opening on the left has a wooden frame, while the right of center features a granite four-centred arch with chamfer and diagonal stops. There are remains of a window opening to the right and a row of pigeon holes in the left-hand gable end.

Inside, the right-hand room contains a large granite fireplace with a hollow chamfered lintel, ogee stops, and hollow chamfered jambs, along with a cloam oven. There are remains of a fireplace in the solar above, which has an unmoulded granite lintel. A probable later rear wing, now known as Trebiffin Farmhouse, was restored in the late 20th century and is not included in this listing. An interesting one-light stone window may have been reset in an outbuilding to the southwest.
