Description
Bay View Cottage is an early 19th century house, originally an addition to the Manor House. A rear addition was built around the mid-19th century, with further alterations in the 20th century. The house is constructed of painted stone rubble with an asbestos slate roof, ridge tiles and a gable end to the left; the right end has a hipped roof and a stack with a brick shaft.
The original house has a single-room plan with an entrance passage to the left and a heated room to the right. The rear wing has a two-room plan, including a stair, a small central room and a rear room, heated from a gable end stack.
The asymmetrical two-window front has two 19th century four-pane sash windows on the first floor. A 20th century single-story addition extends along the whole front, with a 20th century door and French window. The right end is blank, with another 20th century single-story addition. The rear wing has two 20th century windows on the first floor and one at ground floor to the right, with a single-story 20th century addition set in the angle to the main range.
The interior has been significantly altered, but the first floor room in the main range retains an early 19th century mural painting covering all walls. The painting uses colours of green, pink, ochre and black, with a design of vine leaves and grapes, stencilled, polychromatic banding resembling a cable moulding, a dado frieze, two roundels, and exposed sections of the dado. The painting appears to extend around the whole room and is in good condition.
