Description
The tunnel located directly to the north of Werrington Park is a structure from the 18th century, possibly serving as an ash-house or larder. It is made of stone rubble and is partially built into the bank at the rear of the earlier range of Werrington Park. The original purpose of the tunnel is uncertain, but it may have functioned as a cool store or larder.
The tunnel features round-arched openings at both ends and several openings in the front wall facing Werrington Park. These openings have granite surrounds and cills on the inner side that are splayed downwards, resembling a shoot. Inside, the tunnel is undivided and shows no signs of shelving. The roof is entirely constructed of stone, forming a barrel vault.
