Description
Two headstones, dating from 1783 and 1779, are located 6 meters east of the south aisle of the Church of St Ildierna. One headstone commemorates Barnabas Northcom, who died in 1783, and his wife, who died in 1776. The second headstone is for John Perry, a mariner who was "unfortunately kill'd by a Cannon Ball, by a person unknown" in 1779. Both headstones are made of slate and feature rounded corners. They are incised with an angel's head beneath a round-headed arch, with a finger pointing to an hourglass on the left and a figure blowing arrows at a heart on the right. The headstone of Barnabas Northcom includes an inscribed panel divided into two, with the verse: "When you my Friend And Children all so Dear Remember tis a Pointed For all men once to die." The headstone of John Perry also features a verse that begins: "In prime of life most suddenly. Sad tidings to relay Here view my utter destiny ..."
