Description

Hillside is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century, with additions and alterations made in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is constructed of granite rubble and cob, topped with a rag slate roof featuring ridge tiles and gable ends. The building has gable end stacks, including a brick shaft on the left, a rubble shaft with slate weathering on the right, and a small axial stack with a granite shaft.

The farmhouse has a three-room plan that originally included a through passage. To the right, there is one room heated by a gable end stack, while the left side contains two rooms; the end room on the left is also heated by a gable end stack. The central room may have originally been unheated, and the axial stack might have been added later to serve a fireplace on the first floor. Around the 18th century, a single-storey outshut was added to the rear of the house. Later, in the 19th century, the passage was removed to enlarge the central room, and a new partition wall was installed, blocking the front door so that entry is now from the rear.

The exterior features two storeys and an asymmetrical two-window front. The right end room has its wall brought forward, with a four-pane sash window at ground level and a 16-pane sash window on the first floor from the 19th century. The central room has a four-pane sash window and a blocked doorway with a 20th-century six-pane light inserted, along with a 16-pane sash window above. The left end has a large three-light window from the 20th century at ground level. The right end features a large external stack with a curved oven at its base, and the outshut is located to the right. At the rear, the outshut includes a 20th-century door and windows, with two windows on the first floor above. Attached to the left end is a 20th-century farm building.

Inside, the right room is ceiled and has a 20th-century range inserted into the fireplace. The original passage has been removed, resulting in a larger central room. There is a straight stair located at the rear of the right room. The rest of the house has not been inspected.
