Description

Penventon House is a farmhouse dating from around the 18th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. It may have an earlier core. The front is constructed from rubblestone and is whitewashed, while the rear is partly rendered. The building features brick segmental arches over its openings and has a gabled slate roof that extends over the flanking wings, creating a wide gabled front. There are brick stacks on the slopes and at the rear. The structure is a deep rectangular block with slightly projecting flanking wings. The plan has been significantly altered, with piers flanking the central part that are set forward. These piers were extended, and the roof was lowered to create a three-storey central block and two-storey wings, with the top storey slightly jettied out. The overall appearance is almost symmetrical. Near the centre, there is a partly glazed door, with two-light centre-hung casements with glazing bars to the left. The left wing features a 16-pane sash window without horns. On the first floor, there are three two-light timber casements with two fixed leaded lights above, along with a similar window in the gable end and three similar windows on the rear elevation. The interior has not been inspected. The site may have been the location of an earlier monastic foundation and was the seat of the Spillers family, as well as a former barton.
