Winding House Approximately 30 Metres East Of Pump Engine House To Marriott'S Shaft On South Wheal Frances Sett

The winding house, located approximately 30 metres east of the pump engine house for Marriott's shaft on the South Wheal Frances sett, is a derelict structure from the late 1890s, built for the South Frances United Mine. Constructed from granite rubble with quoins and featuring brick arches over the openings, it is now roofless. The building has a rectangular plan measuring two by three bays, aligned on an east-west axis, and stands two storeys high. Windows are present only on the first floor, all of which are round-headed. The two-bay west front, which faces the former shaft, includes a large window on the right, likely the driver's window, with the masonry beneath it removed, and a smaller window to the left. Each side wall has three windows, while the rear has two windows, one of which is damaged. The former roof was hipped. Although the interior was not inspected, it is known to have housed a horizontal cross compound engine made by Holman's of Camborne, featuring 23-inch and 43-inch cylinders on plinths flanking the drum space, along with a conical winding drum. This winding house is part of a significant group of remains from one of the best-equipped mines in Cornwall, which closed in 1918.
