Description

The boiler house, attached to the chimney on the east side of the pump engine house for Marriott's shaft at South Wheal Frances sett, is a Grade II listed building, likely built in the 1890s for the South Frances United Mine. This derelict structure is made of granite rubble with quoins and features brick arches over its openings. It has a rectangular plan oriented east-west and is one storey high with six bays. Each long wall has an arcade of six round-headed arches; the first and sixth arches on the front wall are now broken, while those on the rear wall remain intact. The front wall also includes a segmental-headed doorway at the left end and the remnants of four square windows above the arches. The right-hand gable wall features a round-headed doorway near the front corner, two round-headed windows positioned higher up, and a circular window in the apex. Historically, the boiler house housed six Lancashire boilers that supplied steam for various mining operations, including the pump, winder, compressor, crusher, and capstan. This building is part of an impressive group of remains from one of the best-equipped mines in Cornwall, which closed in 1918.
