Description
Lanow Farmhouse, likely dating from the 1730s, is a building constructed of stone rubble and cob, with the front elevation rendered above ground floor level. It has a steeply pitched slate roof with gable ends extending over an integral outshut at the rear. Brick stacks are visible at the gable ends, with one heating the room at the rear left. The original double-depth plan remains, featuring a central cross passage that provides access to two larger reception rooms, each heated by end stacks. To the rear are two smaller service rooms, including a kitchen on the left, a dairy on the right, and a dog-leg staircase centrally located.
The two-storey, symmetrical front has three windows. The ground floor incorporates a 20th-century glazed extension to the front left, with more modern windows. The first floor has two horned 16-pane sashes flanked by an early 19th-century hornless sash, also with 16 panes.
Inside, the original plan and lath and plaster partitions are intact. The room on the front right contains early 18th-century ceiling beams, and throughout the house are early 18th-century two-panel doors with raised and fielded panels, and an early 18th-century dog-leg staircase with turned newels and balusters.
Attached to the farmhouse on the rear right is a smaller building, likely a mid-18th-century farmworker's cottage that now functions as a store. This building is of stone rubble and cob construction, with a steeply pitched rag slate roof featuring hipped ends. It has a small 19th-century fireplace inside.
