Description
The Barton Farmhouse is a building of possible 18th-century origins, substantially remodelled in the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with a slate roof, featuring hipped ends and brick end stacks, with a projecting stack on the left-hand hipped end. A stone rubble range with brick dressings and a slate roof (gable ends) extends to the rear.
The main farmhouse has a double-depth plan, arranged with two rooms on the front and two smaller service rooms to the rear, incorporating a wide central through passage with a staircase. The rear range consists of two rooms, with a mid-19th century extension on the left-hand gable end. A single-storey outshut extension is located on the right-hand gable end.
The front facade is symmetrical with three windows across each floor. The ground floor has two four-pane sash windows, and a 20th-century door is set within a late-19th-century open timber gabled porch, complete with shaped bargeboards and a finial with a pendant. The first floor has three horned 12-pane sashes. There is evidence of rebuilding on the front and right-hand side elevations.
A circa mid-19th century two-storey extension, set back on the left-hand side, features casements and an entrance on the right. The front range interior contains 20th-century chimney pieces and a 20th-century staircase. The interior of the rear range has not been inspected.
