Description

The Former Ice Works, built in 1907, was constructed within an earlier building by R Richard Bath and may include a quay wall, along with later adaptations.

The building is made of rubble granite from different phases, featuring dressed granite quoins and window heads, with slate cills. There are red brick additions to the south, and the roofs are covered in slate. The main granite structure is rectangular in shape and has three storeys, topped with a double pitched roof that is raised at the south-west corner. The irregularly shaped brick additions to the south vary in height, reaching up to three storeys.

The front facing the Strand has two broad bays under twin gables, with window openings that are spaced irregularly across the elevation. To the left, large granite blocks from the former quay wall have had a door added, and this wall has been incorporated into the 1907 brick extensions that run along the former quay edge. The brick additions feature varied openings, including two double doors beneath segmental brick arches, and some sections were raised and altered in the 1970s. The north flank and west end have fewer openings, with a double-width door on the ground floor at the east end of the north flank and window openings on the third floor. The roofs include ventilators and finials at the gable peaks.

The interior has not been inspected, but photographs from 2013 show that it retains Linde ice production machinery from 1907, including a steam-powered compressor on the ground floor that was later converted to electricity. Other equipment still present includes hoists, winch gear, a crusher, refrigeration tanks, and timber chutes. An extensive network of hoses supplied water to the top of the building for the ice-making process. Additionally, there is flake ice making machinery from the 1980s.
