Description

The Newlyn war memorial is a First World War memorial, built in 1920 by Sir Edward Warren, FRIBA, featuring a relief sculpture by Leonard Stanford Merrifield. After 1945, it was altered to include the names of those who fell in the Second World War, and later to commemorate a serviceman lost in the Korean War.

Constructed from granite, the memorial includes polyphant stone inscription panels and a bronze sculptural plaque. It stands approximately 6.4 meters high and takes the form of a small wheel cross atop an octagonal shaft. Below the cross is a cartouche displaying the borough arms on the front face, with a laurel wreath surrounding the inscription "PRO PATRIA" on the reverse. The robust shaft has a splayed foot that rests on a large pedestal with a moulded cap. The pedestal features carved inscription panels on three sides, which read: side one: "IN MEMORY OF/ THOSE BRAVE MEN OF/ NEWLYN WHO DIED FOR/ OUR COUNTRY AND OF/ ALL OTHERS WHO FELL/ OR SERVED IN THE SAME/ CAUSE IN THE GREAT WARS/ 1914 - 1918 1939 – 1945"; sides two and three list the names of 131 individuals who lost their lives. The fourth side showcases a deeply modelled bronze relief sculpture by L. S. Merrifield, depicting members of the various units in which the men of the community served. The pedestal is set on a two-stepped, octagonal platform, which is surrounded by low octagonal pylons with shaped tops at each corner.

The platform and a short, paved and planted approach are enclosed by metal railings and gates.
