Description
The Miller's House is a miller's residence that likely dates from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. It was altered and extended in the mid-19th century, with few later modifications. The building is constructed from slatestone rubble with stone dressings and features a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends, including bargeboards on the front gables. There are stacks on both the right and left sides at the original gable ends, with a rear gable end stack on the right.
Originally, the house probably had a two-room plan with a central entrance, with each room heated by a gable end stack. In the mid-19th century, a cross wing was added to the right, extending the principal front room and forming a kitchen at the rear right, which is also heated by a gable end stack. The front left bay was extended to create a symmetrical appearance, and the main entrance was relocated to the rear center. A single-storey lean-to with a stack was added to the rear left, and the overall style is Tudor Gothic.
The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical front consisting of five bays arranged in a 1:2:1 pattern on a plinth. The end bays project forward and feature gables above. The central two bays have three-light casements with flat stone arches and hood moulds on the ground floor, while the first floor has two-light casements with small gables. Each end bay includes a three-light casement with a segmental head and hood mould on the ground floor, and a two-light casement with a flat arch and hood mould on the first floor. The right end has a buttress to the left. The ground floor also has a three-light casement with a segmental head and hood mould, and a door to the right with a flat stone arch and hood mould. The first floor has two two-light casements. The left end features an external stack and a narrow single light with a hood mould at ground level on both sides.
At the rear, the left wing has a gable end stack, and the inner side includes a two-light casement on the ground floor. The rear of the main range has a door with a pitched hood. The single-storey lean-to on the right has a door on the inner side and a stack on the outer side, along with a two-light casement at the rear. To the right, there is a gable over the end bay with a two-light casement and hood mould on both the ground and first floors. The interior has not been inspected.
