Description

The Chapel of St Michael is a medieval structure, believed to have Norman origins. It is constructed entirely of slatestone and granite rubble, topped with a stone gabled roof. The chapel has a single cell rectangular plan and may have originally included an upper chamber at the west end. All windows are unglazed. The exterior features a battered plinth with a slate string course sweeping out on the north and south sides. The north side includes a pointed arched lancet and an irregular round-arched doorway, while the south side has an irregular round-arched window with a segmental relieving arch. The east gable end features a round-arched window with a relieving arch, and the west gable end has a small rectangular window located at the upper level to the right.

Inside, the chapel has a round-arched stone vaulted roof and a niche to the left of the east window. There are sockets in the wall that suggest a possible former position for an upper chamber. The east window has a round-arched head made of metamorphic stone with a relieving arch, and the north and west windows have splayed reveals. Historical records indicate that a beacon was placed here as early as the 15th century, and during the Second World War, the site was used as a gun platform.
