Description
Trevillian's Gate is a house with origins dating back to the 18th century, which was partly rebuilt in 1836 for R. C. Vosper, as indicated by a datestone. The building is constructed from rendered stone rubble and features dressed stone arches over the openings. It has a slate roof with a hipped end on the right and a gable end on the left. There is a brick axial stack located to the left of the center and a projecting stone rubble rear lateral stack on the right. The layout consists of two rooms and a cross or through passage, with the left room heated by the axial stack and the right room heated by the rear lateral stack. A 20th-century extension has been added to the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high with a regular three-window front, showcasing dressed stone flat arches with keystones above the window openings. The entrance is positioned to the right of center and features a pointed arch with a roll mould, incised fleur de lys, and the datestone RCV 1836. Inside, the ceiling beams have been replaced, and there is an unmoulded granite lintel above the fireplace in the left room, while the right room has a dressed granite flat arch over its fireplace. The first floor has not been inspected.
Historically, the gate led to Basil Manor in St Clether, which was held by the Trevillians from the time of Elizabeth I until the 18th century. The house was restored by R. C. Vosper in 1836, during which the arch over the entrance was installed; this arch is said to have come from the ruins of a chapel on the eastern peak of Roughtor. In the late 19th century, the cottage became known as the Britannia Inn.
