Description

The Blue Cottage is a house, believed to have originally been a watch-house, dating to the late 16th or early 17th century, possibly 1583. It is constructed of colourwashed rubble stone, with a jettied upper storey that was likely originally timber-framed and platered, and with stone flank walls that project outwards and retain evidence of a carved timber bressumer. The roof is slate, hipped at the front and gabled at the rear, and there is a brick chimney stack on the right-hand side wall. The house is two storeys and has a basement, originally a single bay in plan. A doorway is on the ground floor to the left, with steps leading up to a stone rubble porch with a lean-to slate roof. A 20th-century glazed front door and a pointed-head lookout window to the sea are present on the side wall. There is also a 3-light basement window with chamfered jambs. The ground floor has a 20th-century bay window, and the first floor has a 2-light casement window. A single-storey addition, constructed of colourwashed stone rubble with an asbestos slate hipped roof, is attached to the right-hand side. The interior has not been inspected.
