Description

This is a Celtic cross monument located by the east gate of the Church of St Andrew in Tywardreath. It was created in the early 20th century in memory of Harriet Mary Gott, who lived from July 21, 1835, to April 19, 1906, and John Gott, the 3rd Bishop of Truro, who was born on Christmas Day in 1830 and was laid to rest on July 21, 1906, which was also his wife's birthday. The monument is made of dressed granite and features a carved wheel-head cross on a tall, tapered shaft that is rectangular in plan, set on a stepped square base. The shaft is divided into panels, with two panels on each side adorned with strapwork and two others featuring relief carvings of an angel and another figure. Bishop Gott resided at Trenython. This monument is a notable example of the Celtic Revival style.
