Description
The Downing and Bellman tombs, located approximately 3 metres south of the Church of St Mawnan, are two chest tombs dating from the early 19th century. The larger tomb belongs to the Downing family, while the other tomb commemorates Catherine Bellman, who died at the age of 52. The Downing tomb features a large base made of dressed granite monoliths, and the panelled chest is constructed from freestone or possibly fine-grained elvan. In contrast, the Bellman tomb has brick sides and a moulded inscribed limestone lid. Both tombs are rectangular in shape. The Downing chest is notable for its incised inscriptions on five of its six side and end panels, along with a chamfered plinth and a moulded lid.
