Description

Erth Barton is a medieval house largely rebuilt in the 17th century. It is a two-story building constructed of rubble with a slate roof, and has an "L" shaped plan. The main wing comprises five bays and a central gabled porch tower. The right-hand two bays were altered, but have been restored to their original form and retain stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops at the upper level. The left-hand part of the main wing features two three-light mullion windows on the first floor, and a six-light window on the ground floor, all with dripmouldings. The porch has a two-light mullion window with a drip, and an arched, moulded doorway below. An extension wing is substantial and incorporates two windows, one on the ground floor retaining pairs of mullions. The inner door of the porch repeats the mouldings of the outer door, and is fitted with a fine studded door and fleur de lys hinges. A wide fireplace with decorative spandrels is present in a ground floor room to the left. The house has a through passage plan. The rear of the building mirrors the "L" shape, with a further gable in the angle; this section is partly slate-hung and incorporates mullion windows.
